SOS FROM SHOREBIRDS AS TOURIST NUMBERS GROW - NRM SOUTH

TOURISTS and shorebirds are competing for the same stretches of pristine Tasmanian beaches, leading to concerns about the future of vulnerable bird species and a campaign to rescue them from extinction.
An SOS (Save Our Shorebirds) crowdfunding campaign has been launched to combat a sharp decrease in shorebird numbers in recent years, particularly at breeding sites during the peak tourist season.
BirdLife Tasmania researcher and shorebird expert Eric Woehler said the lonely stretches of Tasmanian beaches that had been most valuable for nesting shorebirds were now tourist drawcards.
“People are spending more time on beaches, so the level of disturbance to birds is going up,” Dr Woehler said.
BirdLife Tasmania is working with some tourism ventures to increase awareness about shorebird habitat so the knowledge can be passed on to guests.

Using math to decide when to put dogs on leashes.
Reducing the threat to our endangered migratory shorebirds.
Going for an evening stroll along the beach with the dogs is a great way to end a hot Australian summer’s day. But, unbeknown to many, little migratory shorebirds are also often soaking up the late afternoon sunshine. These little creatures have made it all the way from their breeding grounds in eastern Russia and Alaska, to spend the Australian summer feeding on the abundant sea life found in the intertidal zone.

(d) To demonstrate holistic approaches to natural resource management.
(e) To increase awareness about land (including vegetation) and water degradation and its control and prevention.
(f) To be involved with planning issues where the objectives of the association are likely to be compromised.
(g) Promote provision and maintenance of community facilities as determined by the members of the association.
(h) The doing of any lawful thing incidental or conducive to the attainment of the objects or purposes of the association.
